The Art of Aardman

aardman.jpg

The Art of Aardman at the Illustration Cupboard

15 May - 07 June 2008
22 Bury St, London, SW1Y 6AL

The Illustration Cupboard in association with Aardman Animations is delighted to present for the first time an exhibition of the original artwork by these world famous studios including Oscar winner Nick Park, Peter Lord and the Aardman Animations studio.

Aardman Animations’ films are now world famous, and the much-loved heroes Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep as well as the original claymation cult character Morph have all become household names.

Included will be original work by both Nick Park and Peter Lord with character studies, film storyboards and character development artwork. All artwork will be on view for at the gallery for enthusiasts and collectors to see and will be available for purchase offering enthusiasts an unmissable opportunity.

To further celebrate the launch of this exhibit, Aardman Animations and The Illustration Cupboard have produced unique giclée edition of the original Morph still photography. This edition will be limited to only 95 and each will be signed and numbered by creator, animator and Aardman founder member Peter Lord.

Aardman Animations was founded in 1976 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton. The first major commission for the studio was to produce animated sequences for the children’s art series Vision On with the popular animated clay character Morph. Nick Park’s subsequent Creature Comforts was the first Aardman production to win a first Academy Award Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1990.

Nick Park also developed the now world-famous clay-modeled shorts featuring the adventures of two unlikely heroes Wallace and Gromit in A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave. The first won a BAFTA and the subsequent two both Oscars in 1993 and 1995 respectively. In 2000 Aardman Animations produced their first feature film Chicken Run, which was an international hit. This was followed in 1995 by Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit for which Aardman and Nick Park won a further Oscar. More recently the studio has had great success with its character Shaun the Sheep, the star of his own CBBC TV show.

Opening hours:
Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm
Saturday 12pm to 5pm

DO NOT Buy this Book!

From our friends at The LittleChimpSociety...

Just a short and sweet newsletter. Although a number of you already know, I just wanted to bring to the attention to those who don't that recently the LCS was plagiarized (images and LCS interviews) and published as a book called Colorful Illustrations 93 degrees C! This was done without the knowledge or permission of me or anyone involved.

For more information read my blog post about it...
http://apefluff.com/colorful-illustrations-93c-please-do-not-buy-this-book/

What can you do to help? :)

Please make as many people aware of this as possible by linking to the above post from any social networks, blogs, portal, or news submission sites you can get to. This will bring awareness to the situation and hopeful shame the resellers into removing it from there stock and sites.

And if anyone is feeling brave please ring Index Book on (+34) 93 454 55 47 and ask them POLITELY to stop selling it :) Please they are Spanish, but have English speaking staff.

I personally use http://www.jajah.com/ for long distance calls.

Thanks for your time and I appreciate your continued support.

ICA goes Psychedelic

ica-technicolour.jpg

As you will have seen, our latest Digital Show is on the theme of Psychedelia. So its good to see more technicolour happenings at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London this weekend.

21 April 2007

2007 is a year of many anniversaries: twenty years since Acid House, thirty since the release of 'Never Mind The Bollocks', forty since Sgt. Pepper's and fifty since the publication of Jack Kerouac's On The Road.

One event that gets far less publicity, but that was at the heart of everything that came both before and after it also sees its 40th anniversary this year. The 14-Hour Technicolor Dream took place on April the 29th 1967 and was the UK's first mass-participational all-night psychedelic freakout!

Organised and in a matter of weeks, the event was held in the cavernous confines of Alexandra Palace. The vision of Hoppy Hopkins and Miles, the night saw a glorious mingling of freaks, beats, mods, squares, proto-punks, pop stars and heads come together to dance, trip, love and be.

To celebrate the anniversary, the ICA presents Our Technicolor Dream - a one-off multi-media event that features an array of cult 60s films and animation, full-on psychedelic lightshows, groovy DJs, avant-garde theatre, a Q&A session with the leading lights of the 60s underground and live music with The Amazing World of Arthur Brown, The Pretty Things, Circulus and Mick Farren!

Chiho Aoshima Exhibition At Baltic, Gateshead

Sky, 2005. Courtesy Blum and Poe, Los Angeles / Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris and Miami. c. 2005 Chiho Aoshima/Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. All Rights Reserved.

Ah, lovely stuff.

The first UK solo exhibition of work by Tokyo-based artist Chiho Aoshima is on show now at Baltic in Gateshead, running until January 28 2007.

Fantastical skyscrapers with faces surveying urban jungles, colourful tangles of zombies and fairies and idyllic rainbows fill the worlds presented by Chiho. Stylistically the subjects are manga-like, following the Japanese superflat movement - symbolically reflecting two-dimensionality in contemporary Japanese pop culture.

Chiho creates her artworks digitally, using Illustrator software and printing in a variety of forms including large-scale murals, which have in the past been installed over entire rooms. The apocalyptic Magma Spirit Explodes is a chromogenic reproduction of her largest wallpaper piece to date

Digital Show Appears at Major Liverpool Gallery

digital-show-walker.jpg
You can see that we are delighted to announce that our Digital Show is being showcased at Liverpool Walker Art Gallery for the final two weeks of the Liverpool Biennial. The Walker is probably the biggest municipal art gallery outside London and is The National Gallery of the North.

Ok, strictly speaking its offline as we created a looping slideshow with each image displaying for about 6 seconds and its just the images, there's no text other than the notice above the screen explaining what its all about.
Also its just showing on this one screen but its right next to the John Moores painting prize exhibition which is a major part of the Biennial and this is the Walker! Its a major thing to have an exhibition here, however small.

Not entirely sure of the etiquette as the Walker did not commission or curate the work, they are merely facilitating the showing of it as a temporary display. So the artists in the show would be stretching things a bit to say they have exhibited at the Walker but could probably say they were part of an exhibition which was shown at the Walker. I think.

Dawn Hocknell Features in DaDaFest 2006

'The Ideal Solution for Digital Mangas'

wacom-manga.jpg

New from WACOM. Via http://www.wacom.eu/manga/
The Favo Comic Pack from Wacom is the solution for anyone who would like to draw mangas digitally. Pen and tablet, in cool white, ensure a natural drawing experience.

Thanks to its sensitivity to pressure, the pen reacts just like coloured pencils and markers. Firmer pressure on the pen produces thicker lines, whereas lighter pressure allows thinner lines, thus resulting in entirely natural line control.

Two software programs are included in the pack: Manga Studio Debut 3.0 is the leading manga software. It comprises considerable special effects, screen tones and features, which can be used to draw professional-looking mangas in black and white.

With Painter Essentials 2, the drawings can be quickly and simply coloured. Both programs feature a large selection of pens and brushes.

Seven Habits for Successful Designers

seven-habits.jpg
From Digit Mag...

There are good habits, there are bad habits and there are just plain strange habits. And then there are working habits, which can be a combination of any of the above. Digit explores the seven top productivity-enhancing habits of some highly successful designers.

1. Get sketching
One activity that seems to be a waste of time to other people may in fact be a vital exercise for designers. Doodling is important. 'The first thing to do is sketch a lot,' says Steve Younger, design director at London-based design and branding agency, Wren and Rowe (www.wrenrowe.co.uk). 'A lot of people resort to hitting the computer early, but thinking time is better when you're sketching by hand. ....
