Hella More Funner

omfg-400.jpg

Hella More Funner

The Hella More Funner signature characteristic is the use of thousands of miniature icons compiled together to create a single object.

The contrast in dimensions of the icons and the master object ask the viewer to dive deeper into the image, revealing irony and hypocrisy. This technique enacts a deconstruction of culture deeply engaged with images, a culture which allows images to construct a more whole and reassuring but entirely false image of itself.

Drug abuse, subcultures, blip-culture, capitalism, art snobbery and hyped-up fads stand out as themes in Hella More Funner's convoluted compositions.

The work can be considered extreme Pop art, a social commentary often focusing on the neo-kitsch trademarks of today's hipster culture: party, sleaze, current affairs. Chaotic overdoses of these icons are filled with color schemes so bright they border on obnoxious. The results are dynamic, intriguing and confrontational.

Many pieces incorporate a wide array of influences and processes, which allow for an unpredictability within the work.

Randy Thurman

randy-thurman-time.jpg

Randy Thurman
has created some fine digital works painted entirely in photoshop.
Here's a review of this work 'Time' pictured above.

The star shape on the left with radiating lines suggests hope, the eternal afterlife, besides a frozen moment of the day. Its brilliance is the accent of the scene, the focal point of the composition, which gradually fades into cavernous darkness, suggestive of the mystery of the night, on the right. The colors and textures do convey spatial depth and a panoramic sense of the "landscape." The contrast and hues read "dramatic" as well as "emotional," and overall, the piece intertwines the landscape with the abstract in a masterful way.

Sheila MaCauley

sheila-macauley-1.jpg

Take a look at Sheila MaCauley's work:
www.maxexclusivedesigns.co.uk

'Art today takes many forms bus mass produced items seem to be the norm for the majority. I however bring about a whole new concept in the world of art using the modern technology of a computer. Whilst combing machine with design the idea of art never leaves my imagination. I find that I can easily explore the balance of aesthetic, conceptual and technical possibilities in a new media which a computer brings.

Composition is important to me; if it doesn't feel right then I cannot continue. The energy I place into each piece of work has to balance with my creativity to give an all over pleasing creation. I particularly enjoy shapes and their relationship to various forms and by pushing and pulling colours into these shapes I can transform them into harmonious and fluid forms.

Through my earlier work with costume and theatre design I feel this has given me the idea of movement and colour on which I am able to draw the experience I have gained in those fields I can now relate the flexibility and control needed and which is vital in design work." SM

MA Digital Art Forum - Camberwell

Spectrumlatest.jpg

I know we normally only show still images on this website but, of course, we love animation too.
We'll have to look out for more of this sort of show, there's a lot of really cool digital work going on the colleges which doesn't get seen much on the 'outside'.

So thanks to those studying MA in digital arts at the London University of the Arts Camberwell for letting us know about their forum taking place today where students are showing short films (2 minute) presenting their work.

Haven't had time to watch them all yet.

Oli Goldsmith

oli-goldsmith-1.jpg

Well I don't think I've seen this before. Taking the term digital art to the extreme, New York's Oli Goldsmith embeds LCD screens into canvas frames and called them 'videocanvases'. Clever.

Oli says
"By embedding screens directly into canvases I am starting to blend these two worlds and introduce motion and an amazing dynamic element of digital video to artworks that really serve to make them feel like living, evolving entities.

My first such ‘videocanvases’ use an approach that excitingly allows for the video content to be expanded through flash memory cards. Seeing beyond this type of expansion though, and definitely the most pivotal element in this new direction of all, is the use of screens that are WiFi enabled (wirelessly connected to the net in the same way your laptop is today)."

Sam Bahreini

VirgoL.jpg

Sam Bahreini is an emerging digital artist. His art is entirely digital and created using computer software.
Sam says
"Sights and sounds and smells can make the past live again, as an Artist and scholar of ancient history who identifies himself with the past, I have attempted to merge the essences of the Classical World with Mythology and Mysticism. A romantic approach to Antiquities only to capture those moments lost for so long beneath the sands of time, a flash … similar to a frame out of a Movie, a still shot from the past. That all being said this is what I would like to call it Dream Alchemy."

I'm a Virgo so I chose Sam's depiction of that star sign from his Zodiac collection as a sample image here.

Thousand Sketches

thousand-sketches-vw.jpg

Some of the pictures really are very sketchy but I like this idea and some are very good.

I am Walter Logeman, I live in Christchurch, New Zealand. This is a project to do a thousand sketches using a Tablet PC, in one year, the southern hemisphere spring 2006 to spring 2007. The sketches are all created digitally. There is an original file, but not an original physical object. The sketches are presented in the following ways, other ways may emerge as the project unfolds:

* On the 'Web Gallery' http://www.thousandsketches.com with minimal clutter and no comment.

* In this weblog with my notes & technical details & comment & discussion.

* Prints. A3+ and A4 Giclée archival quality prints. Prints are available in numbered, named, signed and dated editions limited to 25. Prints can be purchased online.

* The images can be linked to and or downloaded for personal use. They are covered by a Creative Commons Licence

* A presentation that includes: digital projection, a talk about the process & the project, a display of prints. Please enquire.
